It rotates each year. This year I had my single sister Carlyn. So I got to spoil her with the WHOLE $40 budget ;) I wanted to do something more special than a gift card so I decided to make something she could use, and enjoy, and would be one of a kind and made by her lil sis. I asked her for inspiration and got a lot of questions answered about her taste, and ultimately decided upon a pillowcase for her. Here are my original ideas:</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvtU61eF72BlgC9z7BmOweTNOMaKD0SOWcYiQsufw2DOvRTuQXaFeDRhm6t5A0eg9MDpzzGv3L2OzGmr3eXjAhyX1A3crcZ57u_dHCnAEeRxtLDXyEjUXI7iFCg9c7hW0DDZos-Zqz88o/s1600/IMG_3156.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvtU61eF72BlgC9z7BmOweTNOMaKD0SOWcYiQsufw2DOvRTuQXaFeDRhm6t5A0eg9MDpzzGv3L2OzGmr3eXjAhyX1A3crcZ57u_dHCnAEeRxtLDXyEjUXI7iFCg9c7hW0DDZos-Zqz88o/s320/IMG_3156.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703655588846514530" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">The geometric concept turned into making letters for her name. The ones that aren't colored in are supposed to be the letter "c" for "C"arlyn of course. "W"s for Wutkee. Perfect! </div><div style="text-align: center;">Oh man, I'm so glad I didn't pick the design on the top right! I have to admit that this project ended up to be a bit of a headache. Matching seams... not the easiest! And I didn't even succeed totally, but I'm pretty satisfied.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Here she is as a little (mis-measured) sapling:</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFbjk0i8g7bgCayZ0t88QH7rxhR8WZNiSaklyNPUibUQhALkV4UOPG-FlqL1cjcIk7nLf8NtqqTft9qqBbfbPyR7oKVQlUCUq4XSJb9kex80-6KtYdEeLzr3s4BAQCi7yVHZfF4IWPabM/s1600/IMG_2684.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFbjk0i8g7bgCayZ0t88QH7rxhR8WZNiSaklyNPUibUQhALkV4UOPG-FlqL1cjcIk7nLf8NtqqTft9qqBbfbPyR7oKVQlUCUq4XSJb9kex80-6KtYdEeLzr3s4BAQCi7yVHZfF4IWPabM/s320/IMG_2684.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703655584433056770" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">This is the fabric for the back. Yes, I know it makes for a busy busy pillowcase, but at least you can't see both sides at the same time. Unless that's your super power or something.</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg-y-KvKclSP2NGGRJVtcI3YBQA7-Wacu80DLRLTks-WLN58QM78SnReLF8CF8LDmy-7ImufK1ZJDRUqsEPdyqDqYx_CNeOJMvLoWhtlUZ6UKONIq40__hzGp2saDEiogkpx-WpB1vrAM/s1600/IMG_2686.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg-y-KvKclSP2NGGRJVtcI3YBQA7-Wacu80DLRLTks-WLN58QM78SnReLF8CF8LDmy-7ImufK1ZJDRUqsEPdyqDqYx_CNeOJMvLoWhtlUZ6UKONIq40__hzGp2saDEiogkpx-WpB1vrAM/s320/IMG_2686.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703655575831758098" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">(WHYYYYYYYYYYYY DOES BLOGGER ROTATE PHOTOS UPON UPLOAD AND NOT LET YOU FIX THEM!??!?)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Here is the pillowcase finished! I didn't really think out every aspect the best, so the end of it is just a little double folded hem instead of how a pillowcase is traditionally finished, with a really wide hem.</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi21_Kvz9x5_KBxDN1QfxbPwKqQyLFbPPnnXc88X_NqMVrWNlxCbn-IUKZ8ggeOPWj7JNF5UOyrc7Y92Yf6-qkkEpW_jHJq4YN223pQ9kUjzf0Yb_3fx-IaaqrTFvYo2EqBVAbotOMmDbY/s1600/IMG_2981.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi21_Kvz9x5_KBxDN1QfxbPwKqQyLFbPPnnXc88X_NqMVrWNlxCbn-IUKZ8ggeOPWj7JNF5UOyrc7Y92Yf6-qkkEpW_jHJq4YN223pQ9kUjzf0Yb_3fx-IaaqrTFvYo2EqBVAbotOMmDbY/s320/IMG_2981.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703655570982783794" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">And here we are together, with a pillow inside so you can see it in "action" :)</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh0wdpWlkigiZv0tLbz0NB4PTas2oyMyWt5IunAnd_lmP_JgWhGwmoCeOz_uhU4CosQBN5Bkjsme966C1vQeIC6sDtF7OqvJc5kEZlXT2JNmyxy5ssuddquD0bGt4f9-x9nESF4E7BFCg/s1600/IMG_3020.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh0wdpWlkigiZv0tLbz0NB4PTas2oyMyWt5IunAnd_lmP_JgWhGwmoCeOz_uhU4CosQBN5Bkjsme966C1vQeIC6sDtF7OqvJc5kEZlXT2JNmyxy5ssuddquD0bGt4f9-x9nESF4E7BFCg/s320/IMG_3020.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703655564139828946" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I mailed the it to Carlyn, along with a gift card to Nordstrom, a little pack of Hello Kitty tissues, and some awesome stationary from a shop on Etsy.com. </div><div style="text-align: center;">I think she likes it.</div>Ashley Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03855337123996979390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5591486382347883731.post-47253661584269423322012-01-30T20:33:00.000-08:002012-01-30T20:50:48.828-08:00OG Idea and Scarf # 2<div style="text-align: center;">I had this big idea once upon a time. It was this:</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ_7t2A3_jpkarDz45v7oiptn3Gi19rutLSb6rh57cwMtTa9bYM8lxMq88grVLM7OMcovFSziiPAXBFukGxZHiv8M4Kb_J69Et3RfsU-9gy4EEOVlOVPnWAa080IWMft6BOPyMnWRySBc/s1600/IMG_3158.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 192px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ_7t2A3_jpkarDz45v7oiptn3Gi19rutLSb6rh57cwMtTa9bYM8lxMq88grVLM7OMcovFSziiPAXBFukGxZHiv8M4Kb_J69Et3RfsU-9gy4EEOVlOVPnWAa080IWMft6BOPyMnWRySBc/s320/IMG_3158.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703650389203530178" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">I came up with the design because I'd bought a cute infinity scarf with stripes of silver sequins along the entire length, but the problem was when it was twisted and hanging from my neck- at least 50% of what someone would see is the ugly back side with a bunch of clear plastic thread. So that design I made there was the solution. The idea: no matter how much it twisted, what you see will be intentional and attractive. And depending on the fabric combination, it could make it wacky, pretty, or subtle.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">But.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">The closest thing that design has begotten to date is this, which you might remember:</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPQgCnOU2LKVVf9O3xRyb0JPTI1ChzbASq5CItVD2f5EwDpjU1bsPQNzxEWE6iJEgLEJ-NimN771vTJJvzlpeS6ruEpqnwYnTfhCrw0roD-2QbjMFG-hjrCaalRsudO40Il0j8rVdqyVk/s1600/IMG_2560.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPQgCnOU2LKVVf9O3xRyb0JPTI1ChzbASq5CItVD2f5EwDpjU1bsPQNzxEWE6iJEgLEJ-NimN771vTJJvzlpeS6ruEpqnwYnTfhCrw0roD-2QbjMFG-hjrCaalRsudO40Il0j8rVdqyVk/s320/IMG_2560.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703650382125525010" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><span >(Pardon the ugly Bon Jovi-esque hair.)</span></div><div style="text-align: center;">You might notice the flatter grey sheen on the opposite side of the more metallic gold. I only ended up using one fabric, but still employing my idea. I haven't found 2 compatible fabrics that I like enough together, to really execute this thing.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">BUT!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">With this beautiful fabric I bought, I ended up with a new design. This is just one looooooong scarf (two ends, not a circle/infinity scarf)- I tie a little knot at the end, twist it once, and VOILA!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb3FA7WCXHaf-7uMiI4bsMeiYMDUDuaPEzRSgc5XBD9unA3rwI_th9SmGZBiaukYGewSruPIDNVSm4bvhZ8MiOpb_obsjD-BQQ0VYIFjjfuDMX6u1Y1QFoWN-v75eH2wqJNfYhZC3_Hmc/s1600/IMG_0067.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 291px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb3FA7WCXHaf-7uMiI4bsMeiYMDUDuaPEzRSgc5XBD9unA3rwI_th9SmGZBiaukYGewSruPIDNVSm4bvhZ8MiOpb_obsjD-BQQ0VYIFjjfuDMX6u1Y1QFoWN-v75eH2wqJNfYhZC3_Hmc/s320/IMG_0067.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703650380186391458" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-MDH0dyBPa2RMV3Lcy4mrcXeRZU8xMYlshhpMPgg7py1yh90uyhFKfUjMxNgv72yetDdRmIX4ZGFoHmU1RmVCO9Ti-LVXWtLaH7IAUIcOyp436k1Avj8dm0iTwK3iNiOabyWE67lpQnw/s1600/IMG_0071.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 287px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-MDH0dyBPa2RMV3Lcy4mrcXeRZU8xMYlshhpMPgg7py1yh90uyhFKfUjMxNgv72yetDdRmIX4ZGFoHmU1RmVCO9Ti-LVXWtLaH7IAUIcOyp436k1Avj8dm0iTwK3iNiOabyWE67lpQnw/s320/IMG_0071.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703650377556679138" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">Don't forget to give me credit when you make one of your own ;)</div>Ashley Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03855337123996979390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5591486382347883731.post-86724055688712899362012-01-07T09:42:00.000-08:002012-01-07T10:07:47.069-08:00Christmas Apron for Sister!Christmas was coming up, and my sister Jenalyn gave me a strange (but welcome) proposition. She wanted me to fill her stocking for her shopping-challenged husband who "didn't know what to get her" and she'd pay me back. Well I've been wanting/meaning to make her an apron for ages- so I went for it! I had an idea of the aesthetic she was going for, but then my other sister helped me stalk her Pinterest and I knew that RUFFLES was the answer. So for the low low price of supplies only- Jenalyn got a custom-made ruffled apron!<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBTfG7W9BSLCZ2WOHmvta9l8DVs6ZT3j2KIwMjVmRH_c82NOSGfVF4XNb7asPYCJiv6Yb1Ilsr-K9LkhjwkGhzsVxjTuMFOzmFctCN86vCnwwvv0wmREuIlr3UY6AZ4qlEiFt5wlPZCJc/s1600/IMG_2754.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 296px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBTfG7W9BSLCZ2WOHmvta9l8DVs6ZT3j2KIwMjVmRH_c82NOSGfVF4XNb7asPYCJiv6Yb1Ilsr-K9LkhjwkGhzsVxjTuMFOzmFctCN86vCnwwvv0wmREuIlr3UY6AZ4qlEiFt5wlPZCJc/s320/IMG_2754.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5694951310684919714" /></a><br />I designed and made this!<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWF7O5K9ZPjR41lj3PJXkwo1b6Iyd_zPLi72JkvykQV0gXkVvVWswsOo-8rtgxWsWFnnr-plK5_pfRyORs39n8dqLZxoa9zlZRmyLcnGlmrEKd1wxp9wWFlxy19JtlvTDSMfkJG3lyXks/s1600/IMG_2758.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWF7O5K9ZPjR41lj3PJXkwo1b6Iyd_zPLi72JkvykQV0gXkVvVWswsOo-8rtgxWsWFnnr-plK5_pfRyORs39n8dqLZxoa9zlZRmyLcnGlmrEKd1wxp9wWFlxy19JtlvTDSMfkJG3lyXks/s320/IMG_2758.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5694950712870664562" /></a><br />I like the little details like this- contrasting neck strap thing just 'cuz.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO7Q6Qveb70XGETXNFNA3ZiFyWXX5zjcaAVnwA8wZe1WUzHE-4EIa2SrqmskiZ35vwfPTf7BluqySbZ80JegYRemRjZ-7bILboryhtEDlL2TKuFq3OkoeJ0IjznFy1QsU8N4uwDiFt0Qs/s1600/IMG_2756.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO7Q6Qveb70XGETXNFNA3ZiFyWXX5zjcaAVnwA8wZe1WUzHE-4EIa2SrqmskiZ35vwfPTf7BluqySbZ80JegYRemRjZ-7bILboryhtEDlL2TKuFq3OkoeJ0IjznFy1QsU8N4uwDiFt0Qs/s320/IMG_2756.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5694950705665658626" /></a><br />Even though there was really no other way to do it- people I showed this too were delighted by the fact that the cute main fabric was hiding under the ruffles. It's adorable, but there's a problem. There's always at least a medium portion of the "wrong" side showing to the world! Not cool. So I decided to make some reversible scarves so each side looks... cool.</div><div><br /></div><div>Here's my first one! It was way easy because I found some fantastic fabric that was beautiful on either side, so I didn't have to do 2 layers! It is soft silvery grey on one side, and a more shimmery gold on the other. It goes with everything! I did some mock flat-fell seams that I was so proud of myself for, so that no ugly seams are poking out. I made it wider than my inspiration-scarf so it would be more billowy. It worked! Here's a picture of me modeling it- if you see it big you'll see the 2 different colors better. </div><div><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuemzz_AG3F4fwOs0ejNkAnlV5qUDFPP6dRAa4yuypNQgb63EWhngiY7ri5UG_mPZXqHXbWariI5moEFTqE2AmrfEjmNYxA1GaRsheKGo6TW0OvVgCEe_ELCOUkurWF0dPBzRxzpfzEZo/s1600/IMG_2560.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuemzz_AG3F4fwOs0ejNkAnlV5qUDFPP6dRAa4yuypNQgb63EWhngiY7ri5UG_mPZXqHXbWariI5moEFTqE2AmrfEjmNYxA1GaRsheKGo6TW0OvVgCEe_ELCOUkurWF0dPBzRxzpfzEZo/s320/IMG_2560.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685897934180247218" /></a>This one is me checking out some boots I was trying on while I'm shopping, but gives you another peek of how the scarf lays.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnJlNlU7MssanmC4Hk20dRlcEW7zmkMhRFkRAy_S9c_OmNVM7hlIyXRhFXHPttUPbnoYlemm1CTYUoPyNmQJCnOwYuS1RbMGaCM7FiR5wmxFBBHMqGp4lydEJ0d3vmTnlA-rJ8E6X-Sbo/s1600/IMG_2608.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnJlNlU7MssanmC4Hk20dRlcEW7zmkMhRFkRAy_S9c_OmNVM7hlIyXRhFXHPttUPbnoYlemm1CTYUoPyNmQJCnOwYuS1RbMGaCM7FiR5wmxFBBHMqGp4lydEJ0d3vmTnlA-rJ8E6X-Sbo/s320/IMG_2608.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685897928747129602" /></a>Future scarves will feature bolder patterns and color combinations. (Yeah, we have the same name, I didn't get confused.) Her birthday was in July and I decided last second I needed to make her something extra special. She's a queen in the kitchen and an apron was right up her alley, at least in my opinion. It was a tough choice picking the colors and all, but I think it looks fun AND chic. I really like this design and how it turned out! Well except for some minor flaws like the gaping neck :/ Oh well, I'll be more careful about that on the next one.</div><div><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd7Li6zklhkpMYd7F7I318WoXAHRLpXvlAz-SldciU7itYyFUGHGJa7LYRHA5NrC_DzSXZsMv51irArGtDOxmNQc3h1VA0OLSnrIwbyWAMJct916h7bSv2Do2Bx-EdSdCJf3JTTjM4skQ/s1600/IMG_0076.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd7Li6zklhkpMYd7F7I318WoXAHRLpXvlAz-SldciU7itYyFUGHGJa7LYRHA5NrC_DzSXZsMv51irArGtDOxmNQc3h1VA0OLSnrIwbyWAMJct916h7bSv2Do2Bx-EdSdCJf3JTTjM4skQ/s320/IMG_0076.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685895754648792130" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimfCGA9uZcLX_7pHKhxQ2nCrbuh9FcTMPuLZQXj0XvnnwumToOX5qTaNNVOurdo0PFYRtI05o2GtcVTIISg9M-LFbgnYCyH2KUG_XNwUjql87R8EDcIb3vlHrj04O2T8dhCYYmFqZiP8o/s1600/IMG_0083.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimfCGA9uZcLX_7pHKhxQ2nCrbuh9FcTMPuLZQXj0XvnnwumToOX5qTaNNVOurdo0PFYRtI05o2GtcVTIISg9M-LFbgnYCyH2KUG_XNwUjql87R8EDcIb3vlHrj04O2T8dhCYYmFqZiP8o/s320/IMG_0083.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685895744623537618" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZuWAT32qWbg6G1QBVnIB6ICsGUhyKrBu_lUlmIYCbOi8zI3Q1flbk_dW6rH0L8l1LTuuDUOd9Fz54rSoLU8D5pGFu6gvA2Wlmzw8CvuR1EfsKOYfouFhGrbybjW1QXsp_QKROxLnYE0c/s1600/IMG_0084.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZuWAT32qWbg6G1QBVnIB6ICsGUhyKrBu_lUlmIYCbOi8zI3Q1flbk_dW6rH0L8l1LTuuDUOd9Fz54rSoLU8D5pGFu6gvA2Wlmzw8CvuR1EfsKOYfouFhGrbybjW1QXsp_QKROxLnYE0c/s320/IMG_0084.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685895737696747378" /></a>Ashley Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03855337123996979390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5591486382347883731.post-85919100273103310512010-12-27T14:37:00.000-08:002010-12-27T15:43:45.975-08:00Christmas Project<div style="text-align: center;">I made this for my Robocop-obsessed boyfriend!! :)</div><div style="text-align: center;">I spent at least 12 hours working on it on Christmas Eve Eve. It was time for a custom Ashley design to keep me clean in the kitchen! And also, I've never made one before.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Well I bought the fabric a couple weeks ago and have been extra antsy to make it since. I basically copied the pattern of an apron I bought a few years ago (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=43258&l=bf6fa27a54&id=508211935">this gem</a>, from Spain-<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 16px; ">which is a big reason why I needed a new one- because as amazing as it is, it's not really suitable for company!) and adjusted measurements to make the bottom portion a frilly skirt.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 16px; "><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 16px; ">So, below, this is what it looked like all cut out and ready for me to work my magic. My teacher told us after we were well under way that we had to do seam finishes. So this is called an overcast stitch. Or something. It's just a zig-zag stitch over the raw edge to keep it from fraying.</div><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJCA0Z1U5kmfoFj0Uh8Ar_lGgCPmqb9nm2FDttHfsYUmS7Q4rVIzKRpoiXHPEnL_H9j7ACN_aTxY3Q5azJXlCoqzdOYbULZId6vzWG7AHgE5QBzgD_72YLxCgC82_rqlLiA-02TkuJTe8/s1600/IMG_1122.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJCA0Z1U5kmfoFj0Uh8Ar_lGgCPmqb9nm2FDttHfsYUmS7Q4rVIzKRpoiXHPEnL_H9j7ACN_aTxY3Q5azJXlCoqzdOYbULZId6vzWG7AHgE5QBzgD_72YLxCgC82_rqlLiA-02TkuJTe8/s200/IMG_1122.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464571984097149826" /></a>Another technique we were taught was simply to "pink" the edges! (Which you do simply by cutting the fabric with pinking shears- which are scissors with a zig-zag!) You can really only do that on a fabric that doesn't fray much. This skirt is one of the first things I made after college and it's actually held up quite well through the washer and dryer with me only doing this seam finish. And I was really just being lazy, not knowledgable in this case. Seam finishes can be a drag, which is why it's nice to do the French seam- because you do it at the very beginning instead of at the end when you're just ready to be done with the thing.<br /></div><div>There are other ways to do seam finishes but these are the only ones I have really done myself. Not that I did the serged hem, because I don't have a serger.</div><div><br /></div><div>The end!</div><div>Til next time...</div></div></div>Ashley Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03855337123996979390noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5591486382347883731.post-45620616527918471382010-03-28T18:43:00.000-07:002010-03-28T19:58:56.067-07:00An Experiment: A Journey: A Crazy Skirt.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDNJSRnwRu8UBqM8kzoKQehf5vYP5XASOC8J1b2xL0N8dURN3G_Z1HswyrkTEJZ21CtJqOq7wa7zAl8MiRfDnwB-blnRSgxiMurysedkPyyGSPjQnv6woBhjo3FY9zp0Diwcd3YjJP8Kc/s1600/IMG_0257.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 205px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDNJSRnwRu8UBqM8kzoKQehf5vYP5XASOC8J1b2xL0N8dURN3G_Z1HswyrkTEJZ21CtJqOq7wa7zAl8MiRfDnwB-blnRSgxiMurysedkPyyGSPjQnv6woBhjo3FY9zp0Diwcd3YjJP8Kc/s400/IMG_0257.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453870806756689666" /></a><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">I don't know when I got the idea in my head to make this skirt, but all I know is that I designed and made a sketch of it the other day-</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:Georgia, serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"> </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:Georgia, serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">and the next day I was making it.</span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:Georgia, serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">So first things first, I had to make a pattern.</span></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicfJb3zFp7IddpRCRyC27HaQjMUcUwfjKNF-s-jB7JfPerh8n_x_G105uE_MkmilvIyNwJUcvhqhTn95COSiFtaI3WRBcJ1I1I-pcgq-008DzEeC5kUBdsMMJAiqme8qi6Yp8iGQS06GA/s1600/IMG_0430.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicfJb3zFp7IddpRCRyC27HaQjMUcUwfjKNF-s-jB7JfPerh8n_x_G105uE_MkmilvIyNwJUcvhqhTn95COSiFtaI3WRBcJ1I1I-pcgq-008DzEeC5kUBdsMMJAiqme8qi6Yp8iGQS06GA/s400/IMG_0430.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453868023895186786" /></a>I used the "slash-and-spread" technique I learned in patternmaking class. I didn't bother making an accurate "block" with all the right measurements because I knew this was just going to have an elastic waistband and not be formfitting. So I just decided the width I wanted the bottom opening to be, how much gathering/puffiness I wanted at the top, and how long I wanted the skirt to be. So I slashed up my block and added onto the green paper seam allowances, hem, and extra on the top for a seam and folding it over to make casing for the elastic.<div><br /></div><div>Ok so this isn't much of a journey because there are no pictures of this mid-construction but oh well! After a total of about 6 hours labor- from measuring and slicing up paper to stitching up hems- here's the finished product:<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQTQC7zt1SW89fFrIRgKEE6lRu4f43h7GByuAXMHY7HOpJ-hVLN_cF37f_uHSV8IrwWCur3Zc9VufeZbNg6Jkpne7hjMHC_Ms2Z2EGnTa-A_YUoqDSl7nEodyfpgSq-eSrFn3Hyz0trFA/s1600/IMG_0392.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQTQC7zt1SW89fFrIRgKEE6lRu4f43h7GByuAXMHY7HOpJ-hVLN_cF37f_uHSV8IrwWCur3Zc9VufeZbNg6Jkpne7hjMHC_Ms2Z2EGnTa-A_YUoqDSl7nEodyfpgSq-eSrFn3Hyz0trFA/s400/IMG_0392.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453868017182834050" /></a>Not flattering!<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_eKVTjQCrattg85lbLxN-AZ9kTcpAs-MfsWezJ21_U4RlzCWpL5-iEm42HgYC24UxzQaQ1wXbVMZei5f9zmRRrTHLc_I9MWVFiaM-zAzyCGZaRUNWNwI8cZyjbLdp5EP4zrkt5lv6CWw/s1600/IMG_0395.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_eKVTjQCrattg85lbLxN-AZ9kTcpAs-MfsWezJ21_U4RlzCWpL5-iEm42HgYC24UxzQaQ1wXbVMZei5f9zmRRrTHLc_I9MWVFiaM-zAzyCGZaRUNWNwI8cZyjbLdp5EP4zrkt5lv6CWw/s400/IMG_0395.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453868011118578370" /></a>Round!<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ8Iw40wqPNVWmWrD5-JKqsOWizB3Qq5D05eMFv7eigkQC_opj4nPSSBx-APCq0kOScWQAnApmkj-gNJ7cpKfSE4v3KBKw9WXNsjk9RbI33UjHTAfPtTd0WHw6gNIN1rCF5tH7ui6LAVE/s1600/IMG_0394.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ8Iw40wqPNVWmWrD5-JKqsOWizB3Qq5D05eMFv7eigkQC_opj4nPSSBx-APCq0kOScWQAnApmkj-gNJ7cpKfSE4v3KBKw9WXNsjk9RbI33UjHTAfPtTd0WHw6gNIN1rCF5tH7ui6LAVE/s400/IMG_0394.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453868003509770386" /></a>Booty amplifier!!</div><div><br /></div><div>Haha, no really, I'm proud of myself. It didn't turn out like the drawing, but I'll get into that in a moment. I'm proud of myself because I took an idea from start to finish, and employed my patternmaking education finally! Also, I had fun making it. I can get so INTO sewing! </div><div>So after staying up til close to dawn finishing this thing, I HAD to wear it to church. And it made me laugh every time I saw it in the mirror. Haha :) At least it's good for that. Also good for the up-and-down look from the girls passing by and no accompanying compliments! hahaha.</div><div><br /></div><div>Ok, so the "problems":</div><div>1) I don't have the body of the girl in the sketch!! I don't have a small waist- my body just goes straight down to my hips. That's the main reason why I didn't pull this off as well as I thought I might.</div><div>2) It ended up more round on the sides than I intended. If I had to do it again I would make my pattern more concave on the side seams and maybe that would have helped it.</div><div>3) It's bulbous all around. It's just. not. flattering. despite my semi-thin frame.</div><div><br /></div><div>...Solutions?</div><div>1) Next time I'll wear a necklace that takes the eye up and away from the waist.</div><div>2) Or a cute wide belt! I tried one on and it looked pretty darn cute.</div><div><br /></div><div>THE END!</div>Ashley Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03855337123996979390noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5591486382347883731.post-7026630291845183022010-03-17T18:23:00.000-07:002010-03-17T18:38:05.436-07:00A Reversible Purse For MEEE!!!<div style="text-align: center;">I finally made myself something. I needed a new purse!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I was more excited about this before I assembled it. I was certain these wild non-matching prints were going to look awesome together. In the end, I'm just "ok" with it. After sewing together one of the sides I realized I like the colors better in the order you see here in the first picture- so the sides are different. Also, on the reverse with the "seaweed" side, I didn't buy enough fabric to make a matching pocket so there's clash there too! But the other side is plain with no pocket.</div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbaXrVuCqnArpybOn8Nd92lcIxO-uqLXEY4qvHZfdK7vAoqV1f2yAOQR-ryQqv7p5T7hZKGM0qJl4NT1bKwhIAiyz1XdiaP10LLtr9soBtN0HODx-GV1P0UUFHkcB2NNBfR3fiSR9Sjok/s1600-h/IMG_9830.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbaXrVuCqnArpybOn8Nd92lcIxO-uqLXEY4qvHZfdK7vAoqV1f2yAOQR-ryQqv7p5T7hZKGM0qJl4NT1bKwhIAiyz1XdiaP10LLtr9soBtN0HODx-GV1P0UUFHkcB2NNBfR3fiSR9Sjok/s400/IMG_9830.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449779898084796706" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh10OKvb6oaKQtPC9JXHAfTJYntDnBBjzUJYK9hsiSGDRWqChdFY-RbFVUZJsIyXFEYmY_C0zwpbasI0hZ_v3h84t3lh7tu_iOcOV1wAQD8SnrBYCBZlgXu2SYyK6L9CVD4w6ig8-9p54A/s1600-h/IMG_9836.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh10OKvb6oaKQtPC9JXHAfTJYntDnBBjzUJYK9hsiSGDRWqChdFY-RbFVUZJsIyXFEYmY_C0zwpbasI0hZ_v3h84t3lh7tu_iOcOV1wAQD8SnrBYCBZlgXu2SYyK6L9CVD4w6ig8-9p54A/s400/IMG_9836.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449779891364402594" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJNXHvjwVjeZ0whl5k_Ie3mOw2Fh5DIbU6QVd2he11JPRSGzyT9AdGv3RUxRM8xfKub2MAoNoCXyB6h1vDTtAcFQFz-MUtOu8OSkX4IHgUfcSshhxDNBvGwxg8_WaZhepS3M59-Z1Vbv4/s1600-h/IMG_9844.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJNXHvjwVjeZ0whl5k_Ie3mOw2Fh5DIbU6QVd2he11JPRSGzyT9AdGv3RUxRM8xfKub2MAoNoCXyB6h1vDTtAcFQFz-MUtOu8OSkX4IHgUfcSshhxDNBvGwxg8_WaZhepS3M59-Z1Vbv4/s400/IMG_9844.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449779885663540562" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkkjBz8PIF8hlCho4NiJi3Gt9TbYxYaLuG3unlOzoVv4tXyWDCrT9sUGBuEpRSMluDKRLPH04AsRVPFWBV3Av6tsFJG2NUrQRm_DZQEiJt9mjfC6fYBpYkuTDNjCdsmEMAzqcjRsg4elU/s1600-h/IMG_9837.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkkjBz8PIF8hlCho4NiJi3Gt9TbYxYaLuG3unlOzoVv4tXyWDCrT9sUGBuEpRSMluDKRLPH04AsRVPFWBV3Av6tsFJG2NUrQRm_DZQEiJt9mjfC6fYBpYkuTDNjCdsmEMAzqcjRsg4elU/s400/IMG_9837.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449779872330828210" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">This is what it looks like flat- basically. Maybe you think it's tacky to have that plaid strap on the reverse of the floral side of the purse. My plan was that it not be seen when she's using that side. But uh... here you go! It's super simple design. Made smaller than I intended again. I thought she'd like both of these fabric designs and I didn't think it wasn't important that they be related in any way since they won't be showing at the same time.<div><br /></div><div>I am curious to know if any of you find it bothersome when my reversible purses' reverse-side fabrics aren't related to each other. In my mind it's a GOOD thing they're not related so it's like having 2 totally different purses, and assuming that no one's going to look at the inside of your purse and judge you for clashing. I just know it drives my sister a little crazy that I make things like this. So- opinions: go.</div>Ashley Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03855337123996979390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5591486382347883731.post-16867320671414974862009-11-22T21:04:00.000-08:002009-11-22T21:10:52.294-08:00Dog Plate #2<div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000EE;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="text-decoration: underline;"><br /></span></span></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio1n6-t8Eg-2-0AXz-28yk_BdIXnQ7CP8YzyWVzNPi5qOFUG8WfaU3SiWwVySel0EXx1ciPb6oo6CW2NyTQHdZXktzypxt3Z8ExfLOmO8Rgb0czeIp2lir4T1uOQ4dsaurAIjqndongT4/s1600/IMG_5013.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio1n6-t8Eg-2-0AXz-28yk_BdIXnQ7CP8YzyWVzNPi5qOFUG8WfaU3SiWwVySel0EXx1ciPb6oo6CW2NyTQHdZXktzypxt3Z8ExfLOmO8Rgb0czeIp2lir4T1uOQ4dsaurAIjqndongT4/s400/IMG_5013.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407161094905651362" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNr8u5PZc5YtM9YoLjIrgK_5M5yXdNp9CKIyF1ORaG6ePIctsK2rhRP4erGCeMGatgdqNWHl6HWbeYcHjvzmFL9ad5g5xrs_Vc6Vq3hrO1dQ-vQhTISmQEx0aaWLwvaDiHUYOk8-ePnLQ/s1600/finished+dog+2.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNr8u5PZc5YtM9YoLjIrgK_5M5yXdNp9CKIyF1ORaG6ePIctsK2rhRP4erGCeMGatgdqNWHl6HWbeYcHjvzmFL9ad5g5xrs_Vc6Vq3hrO1dQ-vQhTISmQEx0aaWLwvaDiHUYOk8-ePnLQ/s400/finished+dog+2.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407161091548796706" /></a><br /><div>I did another dog plate- and this time got paid! haha. Feel free to let me know what you think, even if you don't want to purchase these. I have more purses in the works! (In my head at least! And tons of fabric to make 'em happen!) You can see my journey to find my style. It peaks at the self portrait. That day I got applause from my teacher and classmates :) It was nice. They knew I was struggling and couldn't figure out what medium and technique I was most comfortable with- and everyone was just really pleased with the outcome of that self portrait. I could say a lot about the whole thing. I'll spare you... for now. So... here's my journey: (and I'm still trying to figure it out!)</div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyrohplSEa_4wxB1QBw2K8ytk2Do3Kd3sQ0X5PViVTarPiTRR-dLwFsk4VW8aJRtF4dmAA8e2EY-TfCZoHPA3zLda3-b0FeNPtN1kByVKEAAXD8gWk16uxmHGmEmcg5WbJl2iy5Tf6-8A/s1600-h/ill+acrylic+with+colored+pencil+and+ink+comp.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 364px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyrohplSEa_4wxB1QBw2K8ytk2Do3Kd3sQ0X5PViVTarPiTRR-dLwFsk4VW8aJRtF4dmAA8e2EY-TfCZoHPA3zLda3-b0FeNPtN1kByVKEAAXD8gWk16uxmHGmEmcg5WbJl2iy5Tf6-8A/s400/ill+acrylic+with+colored+pencil+and+ink+comp.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5387498434860486018" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">A practice piece for the next picture (obviously). I actually did a full on rendering of myself from a picture... and it was just so overworked and didn't "say" anything, it was just gray and white... so after all that work I just transfered some of it over on watercolor paper, did some sketching on it, and just tried to apply some beautiful colors. In part, this "works" so well because of the photo it's based on. As you'll see, I never quite successfully translated this technique to my future work... as much as I meant to :( </div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUvLIRqS9MscH8kp1p-sq7NvmwlO32ps0LAxcQDrGkvVe2dLgY89fe5pYzrGUaTJQmyJ_Ruo4-LLcopOggSCM_Fk7liN3cZh0Kh0vk8wyh5wTxy8xAszPJL5vU1x6eVv4-aMhDy_Vxbl0/s1600-h/ill+d.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 278px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUvLIRqS9MscH8kp1p-sq7NvmwlO32ps0LAxcQDrGkvVe2dLgY89fe5pYzrGUaTJQmyJ_Ruo4-LLcopOggSCM_Fk7liN3cZh0Kh0vk8wyh5wTxy8xAszPJL5vU1x6eVv4-aMhDy_Vxbl0/s400/ill+d.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5387498410982588130" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">See how controlled? The technique we did was you do an ink drawing, pile on a lot of paint that you want for your base colors, then you rinse it off (taping the edges really good). It shows up pretty huge, but you can see the details that way, that otherwise you might not have noticed.<br /><br /> Also, please feel free to COMMENT! I always appreciate what people tell me in person or on my facebook or where ever- but you can also leave a comment on the posts. If you comment then I have an idea of who I'm reaching and and how many people are looking at this. Unfortunately I don't totally know how blogger works so I don't know if you have to have a blog or a profile on this site in order to make a comment, or if you can just leave one without those requirements.<br />(Please feel free to "follow" me, or whatever it is, to automatically recieve my updates. Like I said... I don't really "get" this website.)<br /><br /> I hesitate to say this... but I welcome criticism :) CONSTRUCTIVE criticism! If you have an idea of how I could improve upon my next similar project let me know what you think (just so long as it's not something I already mentioned I knew I did poorly).<br /><br /> If you'll remember from my earliest posts, I'm doing this blog so that I can become encouraged and inspired by MYSELF and OTHERS to do more artwork. I have about a million and one hang-ups with doing art, and I seek positive reactions so that I can be reminded I have a gift that I SHOULD SHARE by making more art! And on that note, I would be happy to hear if you have ideas on something you could see me painting and think I should do or a way to expand my talent into a business. That would be great :)<br /><br />But uh... no pressure. :D You could always just keep looking at this blog and remain a mystery- but at the very least, I hope you enjoy!</span>Ashley Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03855337123996979390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5591486382347883731.post-36298348285006836242009-07-19T23:31:00.000-07:002009-07-19T23:47:30.466-07:00The Latest Commission! My brother Jesse and sister-in-law Kelli commissioned me to make 3 illustrations for their daughter (my niece). They were definitely inspired by the amazing Barbie illustrations by Robert Best. I wish I wish I wish I could let loose and get my illustrations to look like his. I LOVE that style. I'm just not confident enough with anatomy, or my drawing skills for that matter, to just go at a "canvas" with a pen and expect a decent outcome. I should really practice!! (Don't get me started...). But it's not right to completely rip off someone's style or illustrations anyway, so it's probably better they came out this way :) I wish they were a little more whispy and loose.<br /><br /><div align="center">Feel free to click on them to see them closer up.</div><div align="center">Sorry the color is so wacky. I hosted a birthday party a few weeks ago, and part of the party package is the birthday child gets a plate made for them. As it was a dog theme, I went ahead and agreed to paint a dog on her plate- from a picture of her dog which they gave me to look at. First of all- I didn't mean to go "all out"- but I can't even help it! I didn't want to get so detailed for a free little plate, but I know no other way... (it's actually quite annoying, and I don't think I could ever fully explain how or why, to where anyone would either understand or pity me.) Anyways- you should know what the underglaze paints are a slightly different hue and dry a lot lighter than they will look after they are fired in the kiln. So here's what the dog looked like as the paint was drying...</div><br /><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-9-mkK7um0Xfg7pm0RR1vZ4B_g6YkclQjqlSENpbOJdWmfkRjAT-PfmcShpHnKUHNbgTxkHRW4DgUcHlqaNW_0uGvPhSweJF5FmPfKGVydKXzCJ_RhD6DvJ1_dxIdrk-rLD3NGSt3DaA/s1600-h/IMG_9647edit.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5360420862364502402" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 305px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-9-mkK7um0Xfg7pm0RR1vZ4B_g6YkclQjqlSENpbOJdWmfkRjAT-PfmcShpHnKUHNbgTxkHRW4DgUcHlqaNW_0uGvPhSweJF5FmPfKGVydKXzCJ_RhD6DvJ1_dxIdrk-rLD3NGSt3DaA/s400/IMG_9647edit.jpg" border="0" /></a> And here's what it looks like after the finishing touches and when it's all baked and out of the kiln!<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVY0RlxG_92uYkO7GEGK-zODyEG5su1KtyQ7pkrJ3ic12V90JjpmMyzEEqVCTsfKfDDo1P6OWmEpUV7tH0358KDVeZp-VC1L_pV0QMpxrhFPz3B0BCtxFWft4YxeV8J1Je8vgSD5teshg/s1600-h/IMG_9705.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5360420857259248130" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVY0RlxG_92uYkO7GEGK-zODyEG5su1KtyQ7pkrJ3ic12V90JjpmMyzEEqVCTsfKfDDo1P6OWmEpUV7tH0358KDVeZp-VC1L_pV0QMpxrhFPz3B0BCtxFWft4YxeV8J1Je8vgSD5teshg/s400/IMG_9705.JPG" border="0" /></a> Now, some of you may be thinking "I like it better before it was fired." And I would basically agree. But, not to make excuses, it's hard to know exactly how it will come out in the end, depending on the amount of coats you use of a certain color, etc.<br />But I like both. I have to say though, that the non-fired one looks more realistic and jumps out at you more. Ah well! I still feel pretty proud of myself :) <div> </div><div> </div><div>So I'm thinking about getting myself into a little business of making these for people. If I did other animals or babies or flowers (you know- "that" kind of stuff), on plates or bowls or whatever... do you think people would buy it? I'd charge around $50 and on top of that they'd have to pay for the plate and paint through my work.</div><div>What do you think?</div><br /></div>Ashley Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03855337123996979390noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5591486382347883731.post-54459856146939458302009-06-29T15:35:00.000-07:002009-06-29T15:48:49.493-07:00Potential Heirloom (Or So I'd Like to Think!)I made these pillowcases a couple weeks ago for my dear dear good friend Jamie's wedding that I attended in Denver. I started cutting fabric for a coordinating quilt... and I haven't touched it many many months :( It's on the ever-growing to-do list.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyRV1yODHkWMM_nDe27Us1LpFkgBZKvjCy4CIIi0EJp-apbAOyEtnizH8ifvcYen2i_ufU_oqOrmSQYcxi9Jcl0FwH4my8oUcv4m1h77xNomgaFaVbLHhouRnnJGaOSAvbQz0uL5G3knQ/s1600-h/IMG_7761.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337106421858191282" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyRV1yODHkWMM_nDe27Us1LpFkgBZKvjCy4CIIi0EJp-apbAOyEtnizH8ifvcYen2i_ufU_oqOrmSQYcxi9Jcl0FwH4my8oUcv4m1h77xNomgaFaVbLHhouRnnJGaOSAvbQz0uL5G3knQ/s400/IMG_7761.JPG" border="0" /></a> I wish this wasn't sideways :(<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhlj4cAF5H-hJLzykFXYRnjX2AxyO8pV6m0ICfLY63x_ssPfRPJwplmDPaOdCbi6ka99BR2Yyr_tf4Arr1MmzBdaz4j8U7wFrlprfyBxW7cl-W0eb_40CKRoG_zPMSqldSH7_IoorF0-0/s1600-h/IMG_7768.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337106420238414962" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhlj4cAF5H-hJLzykFXYRnjX2AxyO8pV6m0ICfLY63x_ssPfRPJwplmDPaOdCbi6ka99BR2Yyr_tf4Arr1MmzBdaz4j8U7wFrlprfyBxW7cl-W0eb_40CKRoG_zPMSqldSH7_IoorF0-0/s400/IMG_7768.jpg" border="0" /></a> In my children's clothing class last year our last project was to make coats. This is basically an Ashley Original because I modified the pattern to make it A-line, invented the little flap for over the zipper (and search every now and then for the perfect giant buttons to sew on there), picked the pocket style, and tried my darnedest to make a rounded collar :) It wasn't a complete success, but I know it's pretty cute! I love picking out fabrics and putting them together- did I mention that? So great.<br /></div><div></div><div>That's all for now!
